Poland confirms Minnesota man was Nazi commander

March 13 at 2:37 PM
WARSAW, Poland — Poland will seek the arrest and extradition of a Minnesota man exposed by The Associated Press as a former commander in an SS-led unit that burned Polish villages and killed civilians in World War II, prosecutors said Monday.Prosecutor Robert Janicki said evidence gathered over years of investigation into U.S. citizen Michael K. confirmed “100 percent” that he was a commander of a unit in the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion. He did not release the last name in line with privacy laws but the AP has identified the man as 98-year-old Michael Karkoc, from Minneapolis.

“All the pieces of evidence interwoven together allow us to say the person who lives in the U.S. is Michael K., who commanded the Ukrainian Self Defense Legion which carried out the pacification of Polish villages in the Lublin region,” Janicki said.

The decision in Poland comes four years after the AP published a story establishing that Michael Karkoc commanded the unit, based on wartime documents, testimony from other members of the unit and Karkoc’s own Ukrainian-language memoir.

Karkoc’s family has repeatedly denied he was involved in any war crimes and his son questioned the validity of the evidence against him after Poland’s announcement, calling the accusations “scandalous and baseless slanders.”

“There’s nothing in the historical record that indicates my father had any role whatsoever in any type of war crime activity,” said Andriy Karkoc.

He questioned the Polish investigation, saying “my father’s identity has never been in question nor has it ever been hidden.”

Prosecutors with the state National Remembrance Institute, which investigates Nazi and Communist-era crimes against Poles, have asked a regional court in Lublin to issue an arrest warrant for Karkoc. If granted, Poland would seek his extradition, as Poland does not allow trial in absentia, Janicki said.

“The prosecutor in Lublin intends to direct a motion to the U.S. justice authorities asking that the suspect … be handed over to Poland,” the institute said in a statement.

Janicki added the man’s age was no obstacle in seeking to bring him before justice.

“He is our suspect as of today,” Janicki said.

If convicted of contributing to the killing of civilians in 1944, Karkoc could face life in prison.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Minnesota declined to comment on the case.

Efraim Zuroff, the head Nazi hunter for the Simon Wiesenthal Center, applauded the decision as an important signal even at this late stage.

“Any legal step that’s taken against these people is very important,” he said by telephone from Jerusalem. “It sends a very powerful message, and these kinds of things should not be abandoned just because of the age of a suspect.”

Prosecutors in Germany shelved their own investigation of Karkoc in 2015 after saying they had received “comprehensive medical documentation” from doctors at the geriatric hospital in the U.S. where he was being treated that led them to conclude he was not fit for trial.

Karkoc’s family says he suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

Zuroff urged that he be reassessed by independent doctors.

“It is a very common occurrence that elderly individuals facing prosecution for World War II crimes make every effort to look as sick and as infirm as possible,” he said.

The investigations in Germany and Poland began after AP’s story in June 2013, which established Karkoc was a commander of the unit and then lied to American immigration officials to get into the United States a few years after the war.

A second report uncovered evidence that Karkoc himself ordered his men in 1944 to attack a Polish village in which dozens of civilians were killed, contradicting statements from his family that he was never at the scene.

“The Associated Press stands by its stories, which were well-documented and thoroughly reported,” said Lauren Easton, director of AP’s media relations, on Monday.

The special German prosecutor’s office that investigates Nazi crimes concluded that enough evidence existed to pursue murder charges against Karkoc.

AP’s initial investigation found that Karkoc entered the U.S. in 1949 by failing to disclose to American authorities his role as a commander in the SS-led Ukrainian Self Defense Legion. The investigation found that Karkoc was in the area of the massacres, but did not uncover evidence linking him directly to atrocities.

The second story, based upon an investigative file originally from the Ukrainian intelligence agency’s archive, revealed that a private under Karkoc’s command testified in 1968 that Karkoc ordered an assault on the village of Chlaniow in retaliation for the slaying of the SS major who led the Legion, in which Karkoc was a company commander.

A German roster of the unit confirmed that Pvt. Ivan Sharko, a Ukrainian, served under Karkoc’s command at the time.

Other eyewitness accounts, both from villagers and members of Karkoc’s unit, corroborated the testimony that the company set buildings on fire and gunned down more than 40 men, women and children.

Other soldiers who served under Karkoc backed up Sharko’s testimony about civilian killings.

Pvt. Vasyl Malazhenski, for example, told Soviet investigators that in 1944 that unit was directed to “liquidate all the residents” of Chlaniow — although he did not say who gave the order.

Sharko also testified in the investigative documents that Karkoc’s company was directly involved in a “punitive mission” against Poles near the village of Sagryn in 1944.

Anne Frank may have been discovered by chance, new study says

World-famous wartime diarist Anne Frank may have been discovered by chance and not because her hiding place was betrayed, a new theory suggests.

The Anne Frank House museum in Amsterdam believes the address could have been raided over ration fraud.

Researchers say the police who found the secret annexe may not have been looking for the eight Jews there.

The raid on Prinsengracht 263 saw all of those in hiding transported to the Auschwitz death camps.

Summarising its findings, the Anne Frank House said: “The question has always been: Who betrayed Anne Frank and the others in hiding? This explicit focus on betrayal, however, limits the perspective on the arrest.”

Shortly before the raid, an anonymous caller supposedly revealed details of the secret annexe to the Sicherheitsdienst or SD (German Security Service) – but the study’s authors have questioned this account.

Using Anne’s diary entries from March 1944, researchers found that ration coupon fraud and illegal working activities may have triggered the fateful raid.

‘We have no coupons’

From 10 March 1944, Anne repeatedly wrote about the arrest of two men who dealt in illegal ration cards. She called the pair “B” and “D” – which stood for Martin Brouwer and Pieter Daatzelaar.

The pair were salesmen for a firm based at Prinsengracht 263, where Anne’s father Otto Frank also had his business – and where the family went into hiding.

Anne writes on March 14: “B and D have been caught, so we have no coupons…”

This shows that the Frank family got at least some of their food coupons clandestinely from these salesmen.

Analysing police reports and judicial documents, the researchers also found that the police who discovered Anne and her companions were not generally employed to hunt down Jews in hiding.

Instead, they had worked on cases involving cash, securities and jewellery.

The study also notes that the police spent over two hours at the property – longer than it should have taken to arrest those cornered in the annexe.

Other evidence shows that people linked to Prinsengracht 263 had been punished by the Netherlands’ Nazi occupiers for evading work.

“A company where people were working illegally and two sales representatives were arrested for dealing in ration coupons obviously ran the risk of attracting the attention of the authorities,” the researchers wrote.

No firm conclusions have ever been drawn about who betrayed Anne Frank and her family to the Nazis.

The young writer ultimately died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, aged 15, just weeks before its liberation. Her father Otto was the only one of the annexe’s eight occupants to survive World War Two.

For At Least 70+ Years Chinese Women Who Were Forced To Be Japanese Soldiers Whores (Comfort Women) Want An Apology From Japan

(THIS ARTICLE IS COURTESY OF THE SHANGHAI DAILY NEWS)

FOR the past 70 years, Liu Fenghai, 89, has had her sleep interrupted countless times by the same nightmare.

“I dreamed about Japanese soldiers with sabers on their backs hunting me like an animal,” Liu, from north Shanxi Province, said.

The tragedy is that this is no dream.

Liu was sexually assaulted when she was just 16 and her limp, lifeless body left for dead in a ravine by Imperial Japanese Army soldiers. She managed to summon what was left of her energy and crawled back home. The ordeal left her bed bound and unable to walk for over a month.

Today is China’s third National Memorial Day to Commemorate Victims of the Nanjing Massacre.

“Comfort women,” were women and girls forced into sex slavery by the Japanese during World War II. More than 100 were from Shanxi and those still alive today are still waiting for an official apology from Japan.

The clock, however, is ticking.

Zhang Shuangbing has been visiting and interviewing comfort women in the province for the past 35 years.

Of the 129 women Zhang has on record, only seven are still alive and, to this day, they are still plagued by disturbing flashbacks of the sexual abuse, beatings and physical torture they endured.

On June 13, 1943, Hao Yuelian, who was 15 at the time, was raped by two Japanese soldiers in her own home while her parents were out.

Later that same day, beaten, bruised and shaken from her earlier encounter with the soldiers she was abducted and put to work in a military brothel to provide sexual services to the Japanese army. She was kept tied up and raped day and night.

“The Japanese government must acknowledge the crime and apologize. I must live and wait for the day to come,” Hao said.

Hao was left infertile due to her ordeal. Hers is not an isolated case.

“Nearly one sixth of the comfort women I visited were infertile because of what they were put through,” Zhang said.

Those that struggled, or tried to escape, were murdered, others committed suicide, and some simply tried to forget what had happened and refused to talk about it, Zhang said.

“I spoke to nearly 130 women in Shanxi, but there were more women in the province who had been forced into sex slavery during the war. I did not get the chance to meet them all,” Zhang said.

Some 400,000 women in Asia were forced to serve as comfort women during WWII, nearly half of whom were Chinese, according to Su Zhiliang, director of the comfort women research center at Shanghai Normal University.

On behalf of the women victims in Shanxi, Zhang submitted a letter of complaint to the Japanese government in 1992. The Supreme Court in Japan threw out the lawsuit in 2007. The three groups of comfort women who tried to sue the Japanese government all passed away without receiving an apology or compensation.

“They are witnesses to an event that should never be forgotten, but we are losing them every day,” Zhang said.

So, You Become A Soldier Just So You Can Become Crocodile Poop

(I PULLED THIS STORY OFF OF FACEBOOK, RATHER SICKENING TO THINK ABOUT, BUT IT IS A GOOD READ.)

An army of 1000 Japanese soldiers was decimated by saltwater crocodiles during the Battle of Ramree Island of World War II.

Oct 11, 2016
SHARE:

During World War II, The Japanese Imperial Army captured Ramree Island in 1942. The island lies off the Burma coast, 70 miles south of Akyab, now known as Sittwe.

Since Ramree was strategically important, the Allies launched an attack in 1945 to retake the island and establish airbases to support the mainland campaign.

After a bloody campaign, British troops managed to drive nearly 1,000 enemy combatants off the island into the dense mangrove swamp that covered some 10 miles of Ramree.

It was after this that one of the oddest incidents in the history of warfare occurred.

British troops in a landing craft make their way ashore on Ramree Island, 21 January 1945.

The defeated Japanese soldiers ignored all appeals by the British for their surrender, and instead abandoned their base and entered the swamp. Many of the Japanese troops succumbed to tropical diseases carried by swarms of mosquitoes, as well as the various poisonous spiders, snakes and scorpions found in the marsh.

Another additional problem for the Japanese troops was the lack of drinking water and constant threat of starvation. Despite these numerous hazards, one danger stood out as the greatest.

One night the British soldiers reported hearing panicked screams and gunfire emanating from within the darkness of the swamp. They didn’t know what exactly caused the shouts of terror they heard, but only that the Japanese troops were being ravaged by some evil menace.

Unfortunately for the Imperial Japanese Army, the mangrove swamps of Ramree Island are home to an unknown amount of the largest reptilian predator in the world, the saltwater crocodile.

The reptiles can grow up to 20 feet long and weigh 2,000 pounds, but even a midsize saltwater crocodile could easily kill a full-grown adult human, with many being known to eat animals as vast as Indian water buffalo. The soldiers were viciously and mercilessly attacked by the crocodiles.

The naturalist Bruce Stanley Wright described the scene unfolding in his 1962 book, Wildlife Sketches Near and Far: “That night was the most horrible that any member of the M.L. [marine launch] crews ever experienced. The crocodiles, alerted by the din of warfare and the smell of blood, gathered among the mangroves, lying with their eyes above water, watchfully alert for their next meal. With the ebb of the tide, the crocodiles moved in on the dead, wounded, and uninjured men who had become mired in the mud.”

Men of the Wiltshire Regiment from the 26th Indian Infantry Division prepare a meal beside a temple on Ramree Island.

There is a long history of saltwater crocodiles attacking humans who wander into their habitats, and ultimately only 520 out of 1000 Japanese soldiers managed to survive the Ramree swamps.

Some of them being so badly injured and mauled that they were later recaptured by the British forces.

The likeliness of hearing of the Battle of Ramree Island is incredibly small due to it not being one of the Second World War’s most significant skirmishes, but many consider it one of the oddest and creepiest stories in the history of warfare.

Poland And Ukraine Blame Nazi (German) Russian Pact As Reason For WW 2

(THIS ARTICLE IS COURTESY OF NEWSWEEK)

UKRAINE AND POLAND POINT TO SOVIET CULPABILITY FOR WWII

Both countries’ parliaments voted to consider the Soviet-Nazi pact as the reason for the war.

Ukraine and Poland’s parliaments have approved a resolution, considering moves by both the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany as the reason for the start of World War II.

The resolution, called the Declaration of Remembrance and Solidarity, states that the non-aggression pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany was what led to the two militaries invading Poland and then the Baltics.

“We point to the fact that the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact, signed August 23, 1939, struck between the two totalitarian regimes—the Communist Soviet Union and Nazi Germany—led to the ignition of World War II, prompted by German aggression, which the Soviet Union adopted on 17 September,” the document reads.

The German invasion of Poland caused Warsaw’s Western allies to formally declare war on Germany, with little practical support for Poland. When Polish forces retreated to the southeast they found themselves in a pincer, as the Soviet Union unexpectedly entered eastern Poland, effectively splitting the country’s territory between Berlin and Moscow’s control.

The document also blames “the weakness of the international reaction to the escalation in totalitarian and chauvinistic ideologies ahead of World War II” as being what “encouraged the Communist and Nazi regimes”.

The declaration was approved with 367 votes for in Poland’s 460-seat lower house of parliament and 243 votes for in Ukraine’s 450-seat parliament.

The resolution is symbolically significant in Ukraine, as it not only highlights Moscow’s once-secret pact with the Nazis, but also refers to World War II in the Western style, as opposed to “the Great Fatherland War,” which is the name used by Russia and its allies.

According to Andriy Parubiy, the speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, the document has modern significance because of the Russian-backed insurgency in east Ukraine and Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea.

“The aggressor that unleashed the war on our lands in 1939 is currently attacking Ukraine,” he said after the vote. He later wrote on his Facebook page that his own family, who lived in Poland at the start of World War II, were persecuted by Soviets and helped by Poles.

The declaration has caused a stir in Moscow, where the the Soviet Union’s early deal with the Nazis is still seldom mentioned, though the ultimate Soviet triumph over Nazi Germany is a sense of great national pride.

Russia’s Modern History Museum called the declaration a “blatant, blasphemous campaign, which aims to rebrand memory of history.”

The museum’s director noted that the Soviet Union’s Red Army was instrumental in pushing the Nazis back from eastern Europe and said Western allies also struck a peace deal with the Nazi regime first, during the Nazi incursion into Czechoslovakia. However, she failed to mention that, unlike the pact with Moscow, the Western accord was never a secret and also involved no agreement to part Czechoslovak territory among Western states, as Moscow did with Poland.

The declaration prompted some criticism in Poland among the 44 lawmakers that voted against it as it contained to mention of the Volyn massacre , Polish news magazine Rzeczpospolita reports. The killing of as many as 60,000 Polish civilians between 1943 and 1945 by Ukrainian nationalist groups is one of the biggest historical sticking points between Ukraine and Poland. Some 20,000 Ukrainians were killed in revenge attacks.

Lithuania was also set to vote on the resolution, alongside Poland and Ukrainian. However, this vote will likely be carried out in December.

Trump, His Wall And Mass Deportations Of At Least 20 Million People

Most everyone here in the U.S. knows by now that a big part of Donald Trumps early popularity was when he started talking about building a huge wall between Mexico and all of the adjoining states namely California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. I wish to make a few things straight with you before I get into my commentary today and that is I am not a fan of Mr. Trump, or Ms. Hillary nor either of their political parties. I am a person that believes in law and order but the law and order I believe in is Scriptural laws. We are all told to obey mans laws unless they are contrary to God’s laws and this is the way I believe. In this article I am going to give my personal beliefs on how we here in the U.S. need to handle our border issues as well as how to address the issue of many millions of illegal immigrants that are already here in the States.

When it comes to politics I am a registered Independent because I agree with some of the things that each of the National parties trumpet and I very much dislike some of each’s platform issues also. Since my teen years I have found myself to be a person that would have been a good mediator by trade. I started realizing this when I had friends that were very different from each other and would get into fights with each other yet I liked both even though they were different. I could never understand why I could get along with these people just fine but they could not get along at all. I bring this philosophy to today’s headline, if you can please consider my thoughts on this issue before you get all ticked off at me because I may not agree with your set in stone ideas.

I agree that every country needs to have secure borders so that they can know exactly who is in their country. I am for putting up a high large Plexiglas see through wall as a border with Mexico and with Canada with multiple entry points in every border state. This would be for the purpose of making it easy for people who want to visit our country to be able to do so without any problem, legally. This type of border would make it to where Mexico and Canada could also know who is coming into their countries from the U.S.. Don’t be to shocked with this concept, there are quite a few Mexican politicians who want to have a wall built on their Southern Border so that they can control the influx of people streaming into their country from Latin America and South America. If Mexico did this it would be a good thing for the U.S. also as many thousands of people coming from those regions are simply going through Mexico on their way to the U.S.. I am not at all anti-immigrant whether it be Mexican folks or folks from countries south of Mexico but every country needs to try their best to keep gang members, drug smugglers and other terrorist from crossing into their country. I know that most of the people coming into the U.S. across our southern border are simply people who are trying to find work so that they can feed their families and or they are trying to flee the violence of gangs and drug cartels. The Democratic party seems to be in favor of just opening up our borders so that everyone and anyone can come in at will. The Republican party seems to simply be anti poor people and seem to consider all the poor people coming across our southern border as evil people trying to destroy our country. I believe that both of their philosophies are quite ignorant as both policies will destroy our country in the end.

The U.S. media has been saying for years now that there are about 11 million illegal immigrants within our borders, I most humbly disagree with that figure. I traveled the lower 48 states for over 30 years in a commercial truck making pickups and deliveries and stops in every state many many times. One of the things that I couldn’t help but notice was that all over the country in all the big cities and in thousands of small towns was the very high Hispanic populations in the work places and walking the streets of their town. I personally believe that there are probably at least seven or eight million illegal folks just in California alone. I honestly believe that the 11 million the media talks about is actually most likely double that figure.

Mr. trump has stated several times that he thinks it is a good idea to deport all of these folks that are here illegally and I do understand the argument for this but in the end, this would be a horrible human catastrophic mistake. This would be a worse mistake than what was done to the Japanese people during world war two. Think about it for a moment please, if our government did go through with such a removal policy we would tear the moral fiber of this country apart. We would be hunting down millions of people like they were rabid dogs, removing parents while leaving their children to fend for themselves or being but into the welfare system. This policy would cause hatred that would never be cooled off. This ignorant policy would destroy whole towns, businesses, Churches and families for generations. No matter who wins in the November elections we as a Nation must invent a good and fair policy concerning both our borders and the illegals that are here right now. We need a policy to help give the people who are here now a very direct path to citizenship as long as they have not gotten into any physical violence trouble while they have been here, do not have any felony warrants out for their arrest and are not gang members. We should deport these trouble makers or arrest them and put them into prison. Yet we must not treat the people who are here simply trying to earn a living to support their families as if they are terrorists. Many people who are here from countries in South America are here trying to flee the violence and the gangs in their home lands, we must not put them back into those situations. About a week ago I watched a TV program that was showing people taking the oath and becoming U.S. citizens and I believe the figure they gave was that about 780,000 people each year get their legal citizenship this way. The program said that the majority of these people were from Mexico. Since we allow 780,000 each year now I believe that we as a country should allow lets say about one million people per year this benefit with about 700,000 of those folks being people from Mexico and or people from Latin or South America. Well, so much for my attempt at being a fair mediator, what are your opinions?
