247 – Newton Ishii, now retired, attempted to force an invasive visit to former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has been held as a political prisoner for more than a year at the headquarters of the Federal Police in Curitiba. He was barred by Lula’s determination.
According to the blog of journalist Bela Megale , Ishii was climbing the stairs when he was informed by other agents that Lula had barred the inconvenient visit. “Informed, the Japanese turned around and left,” the journalist wrote.
Newton Ishii was known for being the head of the Operations Nucleus of the PF Superintendence of Paraná, answering for the logistics and escort of inmates to places such as the Legal Medical Institute, the Criminal Medical Complex, where are the majority of the detainees of the operation, Commissions Parliamentarians of Inquiry, to where the investigated are taken to testify, and the audiences with the team in front of the Lava-Jet.
The obscure side of his biography became known after years of fame, when he was deified by the conservative press. In 2003, he was arrested in flagrante delicto for smuggling, but was able to return to the PF after a court decision. He retired shortly thereafter, in October 2003, but returned to work in April 2014 after his retirement was revoked-it was when he became head of the PF core.
In an audiotape that led to Senator Delcídio do Amaral’s arrest in November 2015, a lawyer and Nestor Cerveró’s son said that a Federal Police agent was selling classified information, referring to him as “good Japanese.” The Federal Police opened an investigation to investigate the alleged leaks and if the agent quoted in the audio was Newton Ishii, but the subject was shelved.
In December of 2015, in recorded video posted on the internet, Newton asks for more agents to fight corruption. With the success achieved by participating in almost every stage of Operation Lava Jet, Newton was called on the streets to take selfie and went on to be treated as a celebrity.
Agent Newton gained even more fame with a verse from a carnival song made in honor of him, “Oh my God, I gave myself up, knocked on my door by the Japanese of the federal” when heard by more than 2.5 million people.
In March 2016, however, Felix Fischer, the minister of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), in a monocratic decision, denied Newton’s appeal in the 2003 lawsuit, in which he was accused of facilitating smuggling into the country, across the border with Paraguay, in Foz do Iguaçu, in western Paraná.
On June 8, 2016, Ishii was arrested. The proceeding became final and there were no further remedies. The policeman was sentenced to four years, two months and twenty-one days in prison, in addition to losing public office.
On June 10, 2016, the Justice ordered the execution of the sentence in a semi-open regime, with the use of electronic anklet. In addition, the 8th Panel of the Federal Regional Court of the 4th Region unanimously decided to withdraw from the sentence the loss of public office of Newton Ishii. As a result, the police continued to work at the headquarters of the Federal Police in Curitiba, even in compliance with sentence. After a while, her electronic ankle was removed.
Condemned for facilitating the entry of contraband into the country, the agent has free transit at the PF Superintendent in Curitiba.
