Becoming Unstuck

Having endured her mother’s drunken yelling and extreme mood swings for years, Natasha was bone-weary. She decided to leave home just after her thirteenth birthday, taking only a small bag with her.

At the nearest bus stop, she pulled out a cigarette, asking the young man beside her for a light. With a charming smile, he obliged.


In an abandoned warehouse, Natasha lay on a mattress with soiled linen, held captive with a dozen other girls. All of their arms were covered in track marks*. At some point, they’d all believed in the same man’s declaration of undying love.
