Travel – Italy – The Veneto(2)


Day 3. Today we visited Mantua, a first visit for me. It is actually in Lombardy so no lions of St Mark! The old city is defended by a splendid castle.

As I walked into the town I peeked through this arch

before arriving in the immense square which holds the Palace of the Gonzaga family, sadly shut on Mondays! This is only a partial view, I couldn’t get the whole building in.

The square is surrounded by other splendid buildings

including the cathedral.

I walked further arriving at the 11th Century Rotunda of San Lorenzo, the building so old that it sits much lower than its surroundings. I went in but it was too dark to take pictures.

Our day concluded with a rainswept visit to the park of Sigurta, at the moment famous for its display of tulips.
