Another Year

Classically Quirky

I’m so excited that I finished this poem! It is my first villanelle, though I have attempted to write one before. A villanelle is a highly structured rhyming poem with repeating refrains. It contains nineteen lines composed of five tercets (stanzas of three lines) and one quatrain (a stanza of four lines). The first and third lines of the poem become alternating refrains as the last lines of the succeeding tercets, and the last couplet of the quatrain. Once these refrains have been written, 8 out of the 19 lines are complete. In addition, the poem rhymes aba aba aba aba aba abaa.
