Edgar Allan Poe first met Virginia Clemm in 1829, shortly after his mother’s death, when she was 7 years old, and he was 20. Their parents, his natural father and her mother were siblings, and Edgar, who had moved into their house, probably transferred the feelings for his mother to his Aunt Maria, and later to his cousin.
Poe and Virginia quickly became friends, and she followed him on long walks in the countryside and even delivered his love letters to a neighbour. But, at some point, his affections turned to his cousin. It is said that the pair attended strangers’ funerals, held each other and cried.
The family was supported by Virginia’s mother, Maria, who sewed and took in boarders, and by an annual pension granted to her paralyzed grandmother, Elizabeth Cairnes Poe.
